Late on a Sunday night, Gavin Bogle was upstairs playing video games when a surveillance alert changed everything — setting off a chain of events that would force him to defend his family at gunpoint inside his own home.

What Happened

It was nearly midnight when Bogle received an alert from his surveillance cameras showing a man peeking through his windows. He grabbed his firearm and headed downstairs. Before he could reach the bottom of the stairs, the suspect — later identified as Alvin Basham — had already kicked in the front door. The two men were suddenly face to face in Bogle’s living room.

Bogle issued a verbal command. Basham ignored it and began reaching for things. Bogle fired once, striking Basham in the chest.

What happened that night:

  • Bogle spotted a man peering through his windows via home surveillance cameras
  • He retrieved his firearm and descended the stairs
  • Basham kicked in the front door before Bogle reached the bottom
  • Bogle issued a verbal warning that was ignored
  • Basham began reaching for objects, prompting Bogle to fire one shot
  • Basham was struck in the chest and fled the scene
  • Tulsa Police located Basham nearby, bleeding, and took him into custody after a violent struggle

Bogle told News On 6, “When it comes down to it, it’s your house, it’s your family, and that’s yours to protect.” Basham remains hospitalized and will be booked into jail upon his release.

The Aftermath

Basham had been released from prison just nine months earlier after serving four years for burglary and assaulting officers. His prior case involved an attempt to break into a home with a woman and infant inside — and when arrested, he still had window screens from that home in his possession.

Following the shooting, Basham was immediately confrontational with police. Officers deployed pepper balls and a K9, but Basham punched the K9, bit one officer, scratched another, and spat in a third officer’s face before being taken into custody. newson6

No charges against Bogle have been reported. The incident appears to be a clear case of lawful self-defense under Oklahoma law.

Our Takeaways

This Tulsa self-defense shooting is a stark reminder that you are your own first responder. When seconds count, law enforcement is minutes away — and no one can guarantee they’ll arrive in time to save you.

Bogle himself said he bought a firearm hoping he’d never need it. But when the moment came, his preparation made all the difference. He was armed, alert, and ready — and his family was safe because of it.

That is exactly why so many of us choose to carry and train. A home surveillance system gave Bogle precious seconds of warning. His firearm gave him the ability to act. Together, those two tools meant that a violent repeat offender did not get to victimize another family without consequence.

We Got Your Back – UNLIMITED Legal Defense Protection

Bogle had several things working in his favor that night – he was prepared, he had a video surveillance to back up his statement to police, and he lived in a jurisdiction friendly to citizens availing themselves of armed self-defense. That is not always the case.

Even if you did the right thing, an ideological prosecutor hostile to civilian gun ownership can bring criminal charges against you. In fact, a jury of your peers can acquit you, but the aggrieved family of your attacker may sue you for civil damages. Do you have the time, expertise, and financial resources to survive the legal aftermath?
