Self-Defense Stories: Fort Smith Man Defends Family From Intruder
December 23, 2025
A Fort Smith man shot and killed an intruder Sunday night while trying to protect his girlfriend and three children during a frightening attempted break-in. Police say the intruder repeatedly tried to force his way into the apartment, first through the door and then by knocking on windows and yelling at the occupants.
The man told 911 he believed the intruder was intoxicated and that he retrieved a firearm out of fear for his family’s safety. As officers were arriving and working their way through secured gates, the intruder reportedly opened a window and tried to climb inside. That’s when the resident fired a single shot.
Police found the intruder a short distance from the apartment with a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives are still investigating, and the case will be reviewed by the Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney to determine whether any charges will be filed.
